Not long ago, BB cream was the biggest buzz in beauty. But lately, it’s all but disappeared from the lips of magazine editors and bloggers. Brands that are just now getting on their BB game are, well, kind of late to the party. The Asian favorite formula ended up being a bit of a disappointment in the U.S. market — though there are several successful versions being offered (Smashbox, Boscia, and Bobbi Brown come to mind), big drugstore companies like Maybelline and L’Oreal dropped the ball on BB by abandoning sunscreen as its main attraction.
When I heard that “The Skincare Makeup” brand Jane Iredale was at long last offering their own addition to the list of American BB creams with Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream, I knew I would have to forgo my New Makeup Ban (psh, yeah right) to give it a try. With a smooth, creamy texture, SPF 25, and the kind of hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic natural ingredients that make you think it might be safe to eat, I was not disappointed — in fact, it restored my faith in the BB cream genre, and I’ll tell you why.
Price/Availability: At $48, this product is not cheap, but I think it’s totally worth it. It comes with a lot of product, and you only need a pea-sized amount to get the job done. You can buy it online directly from Jane Iredale or check out the retail locations here.
Packaging: Similar to other products and liquid foundations, the BB cream comes in a sturdy squeeze tube with a wide twist-off cap. It doesn’t have the minimalist, pay-for-the-packaging appeal of, say, a Chanel foundation, but it’s not ugly.
Formula: Firstly, it comes in six shades, which is approximately four more than most other BB offerings. I’m the fairest of them all, and BB1 is pinkish while BB3 is more yellow — I mix a drop of each to suit my neutral complexion. This is truly a one-step product in that it fulfills its promises of functioning as both a foundation and concealer. I don’t even need under-eye concealer after I use this because the coverage is that good. It’s full coverage, meaning it doesn’t have the translucency of a tinted moisturizer (which I usually prefer to a higher coverage foundation), yet it never looks unnatural or as if you’re wearing a full coverage formula. It just gives you a realistic airbrushed look, like you’re naturally perfect, and the moisturizing properties mean you’ll never get dry spots or flaking. It’s soothing and will never aggravate other skin conditions (i.e. the ones you might be trying to hide). I’ve used it over active cystic acne, healing cystic acne, and petechiae, these really fun burst blood vessels I sometimes get on my face. It covers all of these issues completely. I would say the finish is natural — if you’re oily or combination-skinned, it won’t give you the greasies, like most “glow”-giving products.
Wear Time: All day and all night and whatever. It wears perfectly until you decide to take it off; it’s not going to sweat off (it’s water-resistant) or start to look uneven if you don’t touch it up. You don’t need to touch it up, it’s like a tinted moisturizer rather than a foundation in that it blends into your skin and doesn’t just sit on top of it. You could probably go swimming in this, I’m kind of sweaty and it holds up really well. Bonus: if you’re the type of person who just might not wash their makeup off (I am vehemently not that person), this won’t cause your skin any problems at all.
Overall: Let’s be honest, I’m kind of in love with this BB cream. I may or may not sing songs to it when I put it on in the morning. For times when I don’t need full coverage, I’ll just mix it with moisturizer so it goes on lighter. It’s versatile, easy to use (skip a brush, slap it on with fingers for seamless results), lasts all day, and is safely contained in a tube should I happen to drop it (oh, the things I have shattered!). I just can’t say enough good things about this product, especially since it’s saved me from having to expose my recent super-imperfections to the light of day. The true indicator of just how much I love it? I’m getting it for my mom. There you go!
