Beauty Trends To Watch: Burgundy Shadow Works On And Off The Runway
So we’ve covered both the top trends to watch this fall and the five must-haves you need to get them, but there’s one particular look that’s been safely concealed beneath the radar until now. Burgundy eyeshadow — or, well, any eyeshadow with warm reddish tones — doesn’t exactly sound like the most flattering of colors, but you’d be pleasantly surprised by how wearable the vampy shade becomes when applied sheer and smoky like a haze around the eye.
Smudged on with fingertips, aubergine shadow imparts all the drama of fall’s bordeaux lipstick without the potential mess or maintenance, and it’s equally effective in matte and shimmer formulas so long as one uses a light hand. Go full-on broody for night with a blood red lip, like Kristen Stewart on the October cover of Vogue UK, or keep it clean with an otherwise (relatively) bare face. It’s especially striking on those with blue or green eyes, but it provides lovely complement and contrast to hazel and brown eyes, too. Just one thing — skip mascara to make the most of this sultry look, but do take full advantage of your eyelash curler.

- Clé de Peau Beauté Satin Eye Color in 116, $45: What this formula lacks (really lacks) in affordability, it all but makes up for in sumptuousness. The light-reflecting velvet finish is more subtle than shimmer and smokes out beautifully for just the kind of soft, hazy look you’re going for.
- Kat Von D Shape Shifter Eyeshadow in Love Letter, $16: The Kat Von D name alone could put me off almost any product… except this one. A unique water-activated duochrome effect means that the shade shifts depending on the lighting and angle.
- Stila Eye Shadow in Poise, $18: You really can’t go wrong with one of Stila’s classic shadows — soft, creamy, and easy to blend, a tiny bit goes a long way with this formula.
