In the latest installment of fashion’s never-ending quest to butcher every chaste relic of childhood, Barneys New York has cast beloved Disney characters as this year’s subjects of their famed holiday campaign. They aren’t quite the precious figures you might recall; in fact, the luxury department store has given these familiar faces a bit of a high-fashion makeover. Read: creative director Dennis Freedman put them on the Karl Lagerfeld diet of Diet Coke and human souls.
Freedman said of the change, “The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don’t change. I said, ‘If we’re going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,’ and they agreed. When you see Goofy, Minnie and Mickey, they are runway models.” For shame!
