I just love a happy ending, especially when it involves infidelity and hiding in bathroom stalls.
Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is engaged to his mistress after popping the question last week. Sanford famously “went missing” in 2009 while supposedly hiking on the Appalachian trail, but was caught by journalists visiting his Argentinian mistress Maria Belen Chapur, whom he called his “soul mate.” Sanford’s wife, Jenny Sanford, divorced him following the scandal (and penned a tell-all book) and the ex-governor and Chapur began openly dating. As bizarre as their courtship has been, the proposal was just as weird.
According to Raw Story, Sanford planned to meet Chapur for a lunch date at a restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Then for some reason he locked himself in a handicapped bathroom stall for an hour to wait for her to arrive so he could “surprise” her. In a statement to CNN, Sanford confirmed his girlfriend said “yes” to his proposal:
Yes, we are engaged, and I’m both happy and excited for what that means. I have long expressed my feelings for her, she’s a wonderful person. My closest friends have met and love her, and I look forward to introducing her to still many more that have yet to do so.
You know what? Good for these two. At least he was unfaithful to his wife for a real relationship, not just grab-ass with the interns or something like that. They went about it the absolute worst way possible — and killed his political career in the process — but at least it worked out for everyone in the end. It may not show Republican “family values” but it does show a cognizance that life is complicated.
