Beauty Test Drive: The Body Shop BB Cream

BB cream is one of those makeup products that just appeared on the American market in the past year, causing every woman here to scratch her chin and say, “Hmmm, do we really need this?!” BB cream is basically a combination foundation/moisturizer/primer and sometimes it’s got sunscreen in it, too.  Some people swear by their BB cream. I know a few ladies who go nuts for Garnier BB cream, for instance. So when The Body Shop sent the The Frisky a few shades of their new All-In-One BB Cream to test drive, I just had to pick it up. While I’m not a full-on BB cream convert, I have to admit it’s a lot less of a hassle than using a foundation and makeup brush!

Price/Availability: $20, The Body Shop

Packaging: The Body Shop’s BB cream comes in a small tube that’s easy to fit into even a tiny purse. The screw-on top is pretty solid.

Formula: I was startled when, upon first testing, the BB cream went onto my fingers as white but turned flesh-colored on my skin. It color adapts! Kinda awesome, right? The cream goes on very light-feeling and sinks into my skin; it doesn’t rub off on clothes or napkins as much as regular foundation.

Wear Time: The product claims to provide 24 hour hydration, although honestly I would say it is more like eight or ten hours. Unlike traditional foundation or concealer, it does not rub off as much or get dry and cakey. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what the point of BB cream is so I can’t tell you if it did an excellent job or not. The most fair thing to say would be “I guess so?”

Overall: I like this BB cream for low-maintenance days. For instance, if I’m hanging out with my boyfriend — who thinks I look cutest without makeup on — I’ll put on this BB cream just for the moisturizing properties and the light tint. But would I totally replace it with any of the foundations or coverups that I use? I don’t think so. It doesn’t cover up blemishes like my MAC concealer. I might have to try the Garnier BB cream that everyone raves about before I decide.
