Disturbing news out of Illinois today: a teenage girl from Missouri escaped from a home in which she had been held captive for the past two years.
The young woman, who was 15 when she went missing, said she had been sexually assaulted and beaten almost daily by an older man. She became pregnant by her rapist and gave birth to a two-year-old child.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the teen girl met her captor socially and moved to his home voluntarily — perhaps as a runaway originally? — but he would not let her leave. She escaped the house earlier this week after many previous attempts. A SWAT team rescued the two-year-old from the home on Thursday afternoon; a 24-year-old man believed to be their captor was arrested. Neighbors told NBC that the girl had been seen outside occasionally; the girl told police that when she gave birth at a hospital, she was forced to use a fake name. The most insane part of this story is that the 24-year-old man was believed to have been aided in keeping the girl captive by his mother.
It’s hard not to see the similarities to other young women like Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Dugard: all were held hostage by an older man who kept her partially/mostly shielded from society until circumstances transpired in which she could finally be rescued.
And as an aside: might I remind you that certain elected officials would not have let this captive teen girl who was raped every single day have an abortion. Although I guess we would need more clarification as to whether a teen held captive by her attacker counts as a “legitimate rape.”
