Mom Sues After Parents Magazine Breastfeeding Video Ends Up On Porn Site

Two years ago, a New Jersey mom filmed an educational video about breastfeeding for Parents magazine’s website and their associated YouTube channel.

Then, to MaryAnn Sahourey’s great horror, some asshole took the video, spliced it with pornography of a woman who looked like Sahourey having sex, and reposted it online. The kicker is that both Sahourey’s name and the the name of her infant daughter were posted along with it.

Sahourey is now suing Meredith, the parent company of Parents magazine, for breach of contract because she claims she was told her last name would not be used in the video. Meredith is fighting back, saying Sahourey signed a release stating she understood the company was not liable for misuse of the video by a third party — and yet, despite that release, Meredith hired law firms to issue “take-down demands” of the porn video.

I sense that Sahoureyis just suing Meredith because she is angry, frustrated and embarrassed, which are all completely legitimate emotions to feel when your image has been made into a pornographic film without your consent. I’ll leave it to the courts to decide whether Meredith acted appropriately or quickly enough in acting to clean up her online reputation. You can read an in-depth interview with Sahourey about the entire incident on pro-nursing site Best For Babes.

But I will say that it’s extremely dismaying that a magazine can’t even post a freakin’ educational video about nursing online without someone sexualizing it.

Ugh. This is why we can’t have nice things.
