Dr. Drew Pinsky is facing allegations that he was bribed and had accepted $275,000 to talk up the antidepressant drug Wellbutrin SR during his radio and television show “Loveline.” While hosting the shows “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” and “Sober House,” Pinksy made sure to discuss the benefits of taking Wellbutrin SR, including its ability to “increase libido,” but never presented himself as a representative of the drug company that makes it, GlaxoSmithKline.
These allegations came out in a government case against the drug company, the largest such case in U.S. history. The government let GlaxoSmithKline agree to plead guilty to misdemeanor criminal charges and to pay $3 billion for committing healthcare fraud.
Although reality TV shows are known to be scripted, it is unnerving to know that a real doctor was prescribing pills as part of a real personal agenda: his own financial gain. Shady much? [NY Daily News]
