  • A married lesbian employee of St. John’s Medical Center in New York has filed a lawsuit against the hospital claiming her wife is entitled to the same benefits as other spouses. However, St. John’s is self-insured and therefore protected by federal regulations. Under the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman, the hospital may argue it’s allowed to refuse the lesbian wife equal benefits. [New York Times]
  • Women in their 20s are less likely to get pregnant or to have an abortion now than in 1990, according to a new report by the Center for Health Statistics. Likely the reason is because of more effective birth control use, as well as less stigma surrounding planning pregnancies around education and career. [Reuters]

  • Uganda plans to disband 38 NGOs that it says “empower and promote” homosexuality. [Think Progress]
