Mascara is a strange and mysterious product. Some of my friends’ favorite brands flake and clump on my lashes, and some formulas I swear by have been horror shows for my friends. Even so, people tend to feel very strongly about their preferred mascara, and it’s not uncommon for a beauty blogger to be kicked off the internet for professing an unpopular opinion on Maybelline Great Lash. So with all that in mind, I’d like to talk about Benefit’s BADgal Lash Mascara and how much I hated it…
Price: $19, Sephora
Packaging: The package itself is really cute. It’s colorful, it’s sassy, it’s got great typography. It’s also HUGE. The tube is thick and the brush itself is very large, which makes it difficult to coat every lash evenly without smearing mascara all over your cheek, nose, and forehead. And your tiny and delicate bottom lashes? Fuhgeddaboudit! I mean, you can get to them with some clever maneuvering, but you’ll also end up looking like Courtney Love after a particular intense night out.
Formula: The reason I bought BADgal Lash is actually because I went to Macy’s in search of Diorshow mascara, another large brush mascara that I absolutely love, but the store didn’t have a Dior counter. One of the women at the Benefit counter lured me over and whispered, “Wanna know a secret? I used to work for Dior, and BADgal lash is actually the exact same formula, only cheaper!” After testing both, I can confidently say this woman was lying to me. Diorshow mascara gave me dramatic, defined lashes. BADgal mascara gave me limp, clumpy lashes.
Wear Time: The stuff stays on all day, I’ll give it that.
Overall: I have a few mascaras that I love at a few different price points: Maybelline Full n’ Soft and Covergirl Lash Blast (about $6 each), MAC Zoom Lash (about $15), and Diorshow (about $25). I love Benefit’s other products, but I won’t be adding BADgal Lash Mascara to my list.
