Kate Upton Takes Off Her Clothes, Channels Marilyn Monroe For Muse Magazine

Apparently, Kates really like posing for magazines in the buff. Kate Walsh took it all off for the cover of Shape earlier this week. Now it’s Kate Upton‘s turn. The 19-year-old model appears nude on the new cover and within the new issue of Muse Magazine, an Italian “Fashionart” publication—though, let’s be honest, she’s not wearing that much less than on her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover. This cover is a re-creation of Marilyn Monroe’s so-called “Last Sitting,” which was shot in 1962 by Bert Stern, six week’s before the actress’ death. With her blonde hair teased high, Upton rolls around in a bed with white sheets, posing flirtily for photographer Sebastian Faena.

Basically, Muse’s cover image is very, very close to the one of Lindsay Lohan that appeared on the front of New York and lead to an instant crash of the publication’s website—as both shots are based on the same source material. Still, I think it’s a pretty good choice to use Upton in this way, as the blonde looks shockingly Monroe in real life. Not only does Upton’s face shape, coloring, beauty mark, pert nose, and full lips recall Monroe, but she also has that ditzy-though-maybe-smarter-than-you-think vibe that Monroe perfected. Upton drips sex appeal, but with that same knowing cluelessness.

Honestly, I think it’s Upton’s Marilyn likeness that has led the fashion world to disdain her.

Last week, after Upton’s Sports Illustrated cover was revealed, a casting director for Victoria’s Secret, Sophia Neophitou, told The New York Times that the brand would never cast Upton because her look was “too obvious.”

“She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy,” Neophitou said, in words that seem oddly hostile against the 19-year-old model, who made the apparently wrong move of shooting to fame at age 18 via a viral video of her doing “the Dougie” rather than paying her dues by wading through the proper fashion channels.

Luckily, Upton knew not to take the comments to heart.

“I’m doing fine in my career, I don’t need to walk down their runway so it’s all good. She can think that and I can think whatever I want about her,” Upton told “Access Hollywood” earlier this week.

Honestly, I am beyond sick of magazine photo shoots featuring celebrities channeling Monroe. Lohan did it for New York magazine, as well as on the cover of Vogue, and more recently for Playboy. Michelle Williams, who is up for an Oscar for her role as the icon in “My Week With Marilyn,” did it for GQ and for Vogue. Nicole Kidman’s done it for Harper’s Bazaar. Kelly Osbourne’s done it for People. Nicki Minaj’s done it for XXL. Scarlett Johansson’s done it for a Dolce & Gabbana ad. Courtney Stodden’s done it … for herself. I mean, no wonder Megan Fox is getting her Marilyn Monroe tattoo removed.

But still, I like this for Upton. It just feels like a natural fit to take the woman retro.
