Brooklyn, she is a squirrely strange beast. A land of artisinal cheeses and small-batch decorative axes. She is also a land where men occasionally deign to tuck their long hair into buns. This is newsworthy, so says The New York Times, which has devoted more than a thousand words to exploring the not-actually-a-trend tremd. It seems a writer for the paper visited a Brooklyn bar and saw two bartenders there who preferred wearing their long locks in a bun, rather than a hair net.
But really, how do you make this exotic hair bun — on a clunky, squarish man’s head, no less?
“[Yoga teacher] Alexander Kellum … bends forward and pulls his long chestnut hair in front of him; then he performs a twisting and wrapping motion until his hair is firmly tucked into a knot at the back of his head. Sometimes he’ll let a little hair poke out for an ‘abstract expressionist’ flourish, he said. A rubber band, a hair band or even a piece of string holds his bun in place. “
Whoa, that was fucking crazy. And just in case you didn’t follow, there are tons of men hair bun tutorials on YouTube.
After all, explains “Top Chef” contestant and man bun enthusiast Chris Jones in the story: “I’m very secure in myself. I’ve actually worn my hair in pigtails once or twice.” [NY Times]
