Laura and Kate Mulleavy, the sisters behind the label Rodarte, rocked it with their costumes for the movie “Black Swan.” So I can’t wait to see what happens when they get their hands on Don Giovanni, the arrogant, slutty nobleman who meets a nasty end in the Mozart opera. The ladies will be doing the costumes for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s new production of the classic opera, which opens in May.
“Opera has always been a part of us,” the sisters said in a press release. “Our grandmother was from Rome and studied it as a young girl. To be part of the legacy of ‘Don Giovanni’ is an amazing opportunity.”
Also swooping in to help with the production? Architect Frank Gehry, who will be doing the sets. He says of the Mulleavy sisters, “Kate and Laura’s work reminds me of my early days. It is free and fearless and not precious.”
Music by Mozart, sets by Gehry and costumes by Rodarte—sure sounds like a dream to me.
