While there are still a few days left in 2011, we’re going to feature some of our best and favorite posts from the last year. Each of your regular Frisky bloggers has picked out her 10 favorite posts from 2011—some you may remember well, others might have slipped under your radar. Either way, we hope you’ll relive the best of The Frisky in 2011. Here’s what Winona wrote in 2011…

1. 5 Animals That Might Have Better Hair Than You

I knew a girl in high school who would come to class with the most ornate hairstyles — curly ringlets, perfectly formed pigtails, or french braids twisting into a chignon — and whenever anyone complimented her on it she would laugh and say, “What do you mean? I just woke up like this!” I wonder what she would think of members of the animal kingdom who really do just wake up with amazing hairstyles? Read on for five animals with serious enviable locks–no curling iron or blow dryer necessary. Read more…

2. Girl Talk: I’m A Military Sister

My parents had only two rules for my brothers and me when we were growing up:

1. Don’t become a Republican.
2. Don’t join the military.

So you can imagine everyone’s shock and confusion when my fiercely liberal brother Corwin announced that he had enlisted in the Marines. Read more…

3. Holiday Hair How-To: Candy Swirls

My friend Aileen is always doing awesome things with her hair, so I asked her to come up with a tutorial for Frisky readers who might want to try something a little different for the holiday party circuit. She came up with this sweet swirly style that is somehow both retro and futuristic. We call it “candy swirls.” It’s simple and festive, and here’s how to get it for yourself. Read more…

4. Girl Talk: How I Got Rid Of Half My Clothes And Found My Sanity

I have always been a hoarder at heart, prone to messiness and clutter. Remember on “Arrested Development” when Lucille Bluth is watching that news story about the mother who drove into a lake and she raises her martini glass and says, “Good for her”? That’s how I watch “Hoarders.” Some guy has collected thousands of Victorian hair wreaths? Good for him! Some lady hasn’t thrown out a Chinese takeout container in 50 years? More power to her! 5. An Open Letter To My Favorite Backstreet Boy On The Eve Of His Wedding Day

Dear AJ,

I guess I should start by saying congratulations. You’re getting married this weekend. To someone who isn’t me. Still, even I can admit you guys seem like a good match: you share a love of tattoos and heavy eyeliner. You sent out gothic style wedding invitations with your names written in a dripping blood font. I get that. It’s pretty cute. Read more…

6. Hair Dos: 8 Easy Ponytail Alternatives

When it comes to doing hair, I am spectacularly incompetent. In fact, during the makeover portion of middle school slumber parties my friends would make me sit alone in a separate room so I couldn’t “mess anything up.” (It sounds cruel but it was actually a wise decision.) As a result I’ve spent much of my adult life alternating between two signature styles: the “sleep on it and hope it looks good in the morning” and the “rushed ponytail.” Lately I’ve been wanting to switch things up, so I scoured the internet for some cute, easy hairstyles. 7. Travel Diary: Paris Je T’aime!

My boyfriend Nick and I began our trip in Paris. We spent a few days there on our own and then my mom and my brother Devin joined us. Well, they tried. Unfortunately, their first experience with the Paris Metro system played out like a formulaic sequel to “Home Alone:” Devin boarded a train and the doors closed before my mom could get on. 8. Holiday Survival Guide: 7 Seemingly Neutral Topics That Might Start A Family Feud (And How To Recover)

Ah, Thanksgiving: a day of gratitude, binge eating, and togetherness. Unfortunately, that whole “togetherness” thing doesn’t always go so smoothly. We all know to avoid inflammatory topics like religion and politics when convening with far-flung family members, but what happens when seemingly innocuous subjects cause tempers to flare and awkward silence to follow? To help you prepare for the worst, here’s a list of seven neutral conversation starters to try this Thanksgiving — and what to do if things turn bad. Read more…

9. Where Are We Living? Winona’s Apartment

So, unlike most of the New York-based Frisky crew, I live just outside of Portland, Oregon. I love my place, which is a one-bedroom in a condo complex (the owner rents it out) that I share with my boyfriend, Nick. Maybe it’s due to growing up with a scientist father who had a large shelf in the living room dedicated to manta ray exoskeletons, but my favorite spaces are the ones that tell stories about the people who live there and spark conversations with the people who visit. I’ve tried to fill my apartment with weird and interesting things that make me happy and comfortable. Click through for a little tour! Read more…

10. 6 Times I’ve Cried In The Dressing Room And Why

I’m not big on crying in public, I swear, but dressing rooms are a different story. Maybe it’s the sting of the harsh lighting. Maybe being surrounded by mirrors makes me feel raw and introspective. Maybe I take the phrase “retail therapy” a little too seriously. Whatever the reason, I have something of a history of tearing up on shopping trips. Here are some of my most memorable fitting room cry-fests. Read more…
