The Fresh Prince’s Aunt Viv Has No Love For Will Smith
“There will never be a reunion … as I will never do anything with an asshole like Will Smith. He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”
— Janet Hubert, who played Aunt Viv on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” shot down rumors of a reunion with some harsh words for her former on-screen nephew. Apparently, these two have been beefing since the early-’90s, when she left the show.Back then, Smith implied that Hubert was resentful of his success when she had been working in Hollywood for a long time.
“She has basically gone from a quarter of a million dollars a year to nothing,” he said in 1993. “She’s mad now but she’s been mad all along. She said once, ‘I’ve been in the business for 10 years and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.’ No matter what, to her I’m just the AntiChrist.”
But according to an interview she did last year, Hubert was offended by Smith’s antics on set, including allegedly telling racial jokes to the audience before filming.
“I was a dark-skinned, African-American mother, and Will used to tell the you’re-so-black jokes to the audience before the show, and at one point, I came out and stopped him, and the audience went ‘Woooo,'” she told Black America Web. “He didn’t understand how unbelievably disrespectful that was to women like me… ‘Yo mama’s so black, when she looks at her shoes, she thinks she’s looking in the mirror. Ha, ha!'”
Hmm. Personally, I already had the sense that Will Smith is one of the more egotistical actors in Hollywood, so some of this doesn’t surprise me. That being said, I can imagine that it’s possible a lot of this feuding is due to sour grapes and a generational divide. Meanwhile, can’t they do a reunion without Aunt Viv? [Huffington Post]
