We’ve always been a little jealz of Sephora employees, mostly because they get to spend their days surrounded by all the makeup, beauty products and skincare items a girl could ever want. And, for some reason, perhaps in homage to the King of Pop, they wear only one glove. For now anyway, as there’s another awesomely cool thing Sephora employees (the “cast” of the store) have that nobody else will be able to get their grimy little fingers on: staff uniforms designs by Prabal Gurung.
Up and coming designer Gurung comes off a recent collaboration with J. Crew, and in 2010 was named runner up in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards. The Sephora collection will be produced in a red and black color scheme, and will include women’s separates, men’s separates and a women’s dress. Gurung says of his Sephora uniforms:
“My intention was to reflect the style and playfulness of shopping in a Sephora store, but to also make sure they would be functional in such a fast-paced environment. The dress incorporates one of my favorite design elements, offering a flash of vibrant red, while the women’s pant suit and the separates for men give a sleeker, more tailored look.”
We went to the debut of the uniforms last night to check them out in person and hear Gurung speak. He revealed that the shift dress he created for Sephora, lined in his favorite color (red!), was one that he had wanted to do for his own collection for some time. Ultimately, he said, “I took on this task because I want to make people feel good and look good. If there’s a cast member somewhere, in Alabama or anywhere, someone I’ll probably never meet, who can look in the mirror wearing my design and feel good about themselves, then I’ve succeeded. Fashion is about making someone feel a little bit better than they normally feel.”
