Newt Gingriches Promises He Won’t Cheat On His Third Wife

Politicians and peanut butter go together like infidelity and chocolate. Wait. Hmm. Oh, you know what I mean. Anyway, wannabe GOP presidential nominee Newt Gingrich is now supporting a pledge from a social conservative group called The Family Leader promising to be faithful to his wife. The candidate issued a statement saying he agrees with the following:

“I pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of other.”

Now, marital fidelity is a fine idea indeed for those who choose it; the thing is, he hasn’t. Gingrich is on Wife #3 and carried on an affair with Wife #2 while he lead the impeachment campaign against President Clinton. (Gingrich has also been accused of filing for divorce from Wife #1 while she was hospitalized for cancer, although his daughter disputes that claim.)

But that’s not all! In his support of The Family Leader pledge, Gingrich also promises to “vigorously enforce” the Defense of Marriage Act — i.e. restrict gay marriage — and ” oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman.”

So let’s recap: a candidate who has been married three times and cheated on his wife while trying to hammer someone else for cheating, has promised not to cheat anymore but also to deny gay people the sacred right of marriage.

Got it. Okay. Just wanted to make sure we’re clear. Carry on!
