A fifth woman has accused Herman Cain, that charming roué, of sexual harassment. Donna Donella, 40, of Arlington, Virginia, said Cain tried to get her to set him up with an Egyptian businesswoman and when she refused, he asked her out to dinner. She refused that, too. (I mean, who wants to be a guy’s second choice, amiright?) According to The Washington Examiner, Donna Donella is a former employee of the U.S. Agency for International Development who hired Cain to deliver a speech in 2002. According to Donella, a 30-something businesswoman from Egypt asked a question after the speech. ”[A]fter the seminar was over,” Donella told The Washington Examiner, “Cain came over to me and a colleague and said, ‘Could you put me in touch with that lovely young lady who asked the question, so I can give her a more thorough answer over dinner?’”
Donna Donella said both she and the colleague got a creepy vibe from his request. ”I couldn’t swear that he had some untoward intentions, but we all thought his tone was suspect and we didn’t feel comfortable putting him in touch with that woman,” she told the Examiner. When the women declined to introduce him to the Egyptian woman, Cain allegedly replied, “Then you and I can have dinner” (presumably in a way that implied the two of them would be alone). Two other female colleagues, who apparently overheard this whole conversation, then intervened, suggesting they all get dinner together. Which they did, Donella said, adding that Cain ordered two bottles of $400 wine and stuck the women with the bill. At least he did not sexually harass any of them during dinner!
Donna Donella said she spoke up about Cain’s behavior after hearing the tales of four other women who were sexually harassed by him. The first two women to accused Cain of sexual harassment took financial settlements in exchange for never speaking publicly about the incidents. Yesterday, the first woman to attach her name/ face to allegations against Cain came forward and she (Sharon Bialek) described him as soliciting sex from her in exchange for helping her get a job.
Cain’s campaign did not respond to inquiries from the Washington Examiner. According to Politico.com, Cain is holding a press conference this afternoon in Phoenix to address all the allegations against him. In the meantime, they’ve sent out a smear email with the headline “Who Is Sharon Bialek?” drawing attention to the fact she has filed for bankruptcy three times, hired a lawyer who is a long-time Democratic donor, was sued over a paternity matter, and has had nine employers in 17 years. Because you can’t be sexually harassed if you’ve ever hired a Democrat for a lawyer! Or filed for bankruptcy! Never!
