No one in my book club is having children after last month’s selection: We Need To Talk About Kevin, by Lionel Shriver. It’s a novel about Eva, a successful travel guide writer who is ambivalent about getting pregnant and ends up giving birth to pure evil. No, it’s not like “Rosemary’s Baby” with a literally evil child: her son Kevin is psychopathic and Eva realizes it, but her husband is completely oblivious. So Kevin grows up, tormenting and terrorizing the people around him, until one day as a teenager he commits a heinous crime that will leave your blood cold. It’s an amazing book that I highly recommend reading. So I can’t wait for the film version in theaters early next year, starring Tilda Swinton as the mom, John C. Reilly as the dad, and Ezra Miller as Kevin. The trailer is absolutely chilling, so I can only imagine how disturbing the actual movie will be. [YouTube]
