“Dedication To My Ex” By Lloyd Is The Women’s Studies Dept Worst Nightmare (NSFW)

What is there to say about “Dedication To My Ex,” the catchy pop song by Lloyd all about his ex’s vagina? I mean, really, what should I say?  I’ve been sitting here typing and deleting and typing again and … I just don’t know what to say. “Dedication To My Ex” is a super-catchy pop song that could have been written and performed by Hanson, if only the lyrics were not all about an unnamed ex and how her “p**sy done changed.”

In the most extreme objectification and commodification of the vadge that you’ll probably ever hear in a pop song, Lloyd, Lil Wayne and Andre 3000 implore this woman “tell me where that p**sy go / because it don’t feel the same no more” and asks, pleadingly, “why is this happening to me? / she told me that it was my p**sy.” (These are the NSFW lyrics; there is a cleaned up version of the song — “the radio edit” –where he sings “I miss that lovin'” instead of “I miss that p**sy.”) If all that’s not gross enough, as a bow on top, in lyrics towards the end of the song he sings “I’m about to kill this bitch.” The song finishes with Lloyd saying “F**k that bitch” and then laughing.

It’s not the use of the word “p**sy” in a song that I object to or even a guy singing an ode to it. It’s that it’s such a possessive song that completely characterizes this woman and her vagina as dirty, bad, and gross after she’s cheated. That’s what the singer is lamenting — the quality of “his” p**sy. The p**sy is the woman and the woman/p**sy is Lloyd’s possession, repeatedly referring to her vagina as “my s**t” and wondering what she did with his vagina. As blogger Ali Trachta put it at the L.A. Weekly, it’s “dehumanizing.”

Like I said, I don’t even know what to say about this misogyny. I like the music in the song; I’m just tired by the hatred some artists, especially hip hop artists, have towards women. It’s sad that such a catchy, upbeat, fun song scrapes the bottom of the barrel to distinguish itself. [L.A. Weekly]

[I just want to mention that this song is basically the male equivalent of “Smell Yo Dick” by Riskay. Check out the link to that video above. — Editor]
