I am kind of fascinated by the movie “This Is Not A Film,” which screened at the Toronto Film Festival and has now been picked up for release in the US. The film is by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who has been sentenced to six years in jail for allegedly making “propaganda against the Islamic Republic” and banned from filmmaking for 20 years. And so he made “This Is Not A Film” while under house arrest. It’s a 75-minute look at a day in his life as he tried to appeal his verdict. It was shot on an iPhone by a friend and, for its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie had to be smuggled out of the country in a cake. Panahi has serious commitment to his craft and I think it’s pretty amazing that audiences will get to see this work. I only hope it doesn’t incur him graver punishment.
