Fashion Challenge: One Dress, A Dozen Different Ways

I hope you like the dress I’m wearing in today’s “What Are We Wearing Today” because you’re going to see an awful lot more of it. That’s because, as of today, I’m trying out the Uniform Project. What is the Uniform Project? Started by Sheena Matheiken in 2009, the U.P. is meant to get consumers to reconsider how much they really need and to get creative with what they already have. Sheena wore the same little black dress (she washed it frequently, duh) for 365 days, to show people that they could make do with less. The challenge was to make it look different every day. As she styled herself through the project, she also raised funds for the Akanksha Foundation, a non-profit organization providing education to underprivileged children living in Indian slums. The message was: with sustainability and responsibility, we can have fun with fashion and give back to our communities.I was inspired to try the project — as hundreds of girls have — after writing about Forever 21, fast fashion and ethical business practices. Writing that article made me realize that supporting ethical business is only one part of the solution. We also need to address the problem of overconsumption that runs rampant. We buy way more than we need. And I’m definitely very, very guilty of this. So I consider this uniform project challenge as much a personal test as a public challenge. My dress won’t be the standard black dress that Sheena wore for her year of outfits — but nevertheless, I do think it’ll provide a solid base for mixing, matching and playing around.

And I encourage you you to take the challenge with me! Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be wearing and styling the same dress as many ways and days as I can. Find a dress you think has some styling legs, and challenge yourself to get creative in how you wear it. Pledge to take part in the Uniform Project, even for a week or two, and see how far you can sustainably take your fashion. {encode=”[email protected]” title=”Send us pics”} of yourself in your U.P. outfits and we’ll include them in an upcoming slideshow!
