Who We Would Cast In “The Carrie Diaries”

Sex and the City 2” shook me free of my Carrie/Samantha/Miranda/Charlotte addiction. These days, I can’t even watch reruns of the show without getting flashbacks to that awful Abu Dhabi market scene. And yet, I’m kind of interested in the prospect of a TV show based on The Carrie Diaries, Candace Bushnell’s prequel to the show. Apparently, The CW is interested in optioning the property, and are gunning for Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage—the dream team behind “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl“—to produce it.

This actually makes a whole lot of sense. The CW specializes in excellent trashtastic high school series. Not to mention that this one would different from “Gossip Girl” since Carrie grew up in suburban Connecticut. And hello, Carrie went to school in the ’80s, so I am picturing lots of neon and lace gloves. The only problem is that, technically, the other ladies aren’t in the book. Well—as Jessica who actually read them clarifies—Samantha makes a brief appearance at the end of the book and Charlotte and Miranda don’t materialize until Summer in the City. But come on, we want the whole crew together at the lunch table, kind of the proto-brunch spot! So we’re hoping producers will take some artistic liberty there. And to help them out, here is who we think could play the assorted roles.

  • The super obvious choice is Blake Lively. Too bad she’s in The CW’s other show, “Gossip Girl.”
  • Emma Roberts has also been rumored for the part. But she feels a little brunette to me.
  • The youngest Olsen sister, Elizabeth Olsen, would be an awesome choice.
  • Shenae Grimes has a similar-shaped face as Sarah Jessica Parker. But again, she’s on “90210.”
  • Maybe producers can coax Taylor Momsen out of her acting retirement?
  • Brit Marling of “Another Earth” would be perfect. But she would never sign on.
  • My final choice: Ashley Tisdale. She was great on “Hellcats,” and since it has been canceled, would no doubt be interested in the gig. And she definitely looks the part.

  • Dakota Fanning could really edge herself up by taking the role.
  • Sorry to pick another “Hellcats” castmate, but Aly Michalka has the right sex pot vibe.
  • Gothamist points out that Christina Aguilera did an awesome Samantha on “SNL.”
  • Hello, Kristen Bell.
  • Amanda Bynes sure has Kim Cattrall’s nose. Her face could be hers with a touch of baby roundess to it.
  • My final choice: Katie Cassidy of “Melrose Place” and “Gossip Girl” last season. She plays a great relatable bad girl.

  • Candace Bushnell wanted Selena Gomez for the part when “The Carrie Diaries” was going to be a movie.
  • Minka Kelly would be perfect. But too bad she’s now a “Charlie’s Angel.”
  • How about “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Gossip Girl” alum, Michelle Trachtenberg?
  • Alexis Bledel might be ready for another television gig, post “Traveling Pants.”
  • Hailee Steinfeld. Sure, it’s a long way from Oscar nominee to CW show, but she just screams Charlotte to me. Although she is an age mix-match with the above.
  • My final choice: Emma Roberts makes the most sense to me here.

  • Most obvious redhead: Lauren Prepon. Though she might be a little old for it.
  • Deborah Ann Woll of “True Blood” would be pretty great.
  • If they cast the youngest route here, Molly Quinn of “Castle” looks very young Miranda.
  • Ditto for Chloe Moretz of “Kick Ass.”
  • My final pick: Evan Rachel Wood. I’ll do anything to get her back on TV again.

What do you think? Are you even remotely interested in this show? If so, who would be your cast picks?
