Lady Gaga’s Video For “Yoü and I” Is Intentionally As Confusing As Love

Yesterday, Lady Gaga‘s video for “Yoü and I” was supposed to premiere on MTV at exactly 7:49p.m. However, after it leaked earlier in the week, Gaga jumped the gun on unveiling the video, which features her as mermaid Yuyi and as dude Jo Calderone, as well as rocking her mother’s actual wedding dress. To make it up to MTV, Gaga still sat down with Sway at the anointed time to talk about the video. Because the song has that umlaut in the name, I had wondered if it was a reference to Lüc Carl. And that sure appears to be the case, though perhaps they are broken up after all? “I wrote the song about this guy that I used to date … Sometimes in love, you can’t make it work,” said Gaga. “No matter what you do, there’s this giant boundary between you and someone else. So that’s what it’s about, perceiving in your imagination that there’s something magical inside of you that you can make it work.” Whoa. That’s kinda very true. “When you’re in love, you’ll be willing to walk and do the craziest and most inconvenient things you can possibly imagine,” continued Gaga. “The video is quite complex in the way that the story is told, and it’s meant to be slightly linear and slightly twisted and confusing, which is the way that love is.”

Oh, but that wasn’t the only Gaga video of the day. During “Jersey Shore,” MTV unveiled her promo for the MTV VMAs, giving a snippet of the song and getting deep again. “I really believe that art is this huge lie,” she said. “We sing it, we dance it and we dress it every day. And me and my friends hope that someday, if we tell it enough, it will come true.”

What do you think of these two videos?
