10 Movies We’d Like To See In Smell-O-Vision

Don’t be confused. “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World,” starring Jessica Alba and Joel McHale, is not a 3D movie—it’s actually 4D. Director Robert Rodriguez is bringing it to you in “Aroma-Scope.” In other words, movie-goers will get scratch n’ sniff cards that have them smelling scents that correspond with specific scenes in the flick. “Just watching my own kids with interactive gaming, you ask them to watch a movie, it just feels so passive to them. I thought, this helps bridge the gap,” said Rodriguez, who explained that one of the scents is reminiscent of a dirty diaper. “Originally, we didn’t have any really rancid smells, but kids wanted something really stinky in there. It really doesn’t smell that bad. No one’s going to get sick in the theater.” Phew. [Huffington Post]

Aroma-Scope is supposed to take the experience to the next level, but … I have no interest in seeing “Spy Kids.” So here, some movies I’d actually like to see using this technology.

  • “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” The old school one. It just seems fitting.
  • “Ides of March.” It won’t be enough to see George Clooney and Ryan Gosling on screen together—we want to smell them, too.
  • “Julia & Julia.” Cause I bet the recipes smelled delish.
  • “Dazed and Confused.” The whole thing would smell like weed and incense.
  • “The Blue Lagoon.” I can almost feel the salt air in my nostrils now. Smells that remind me of oceans and vacations are always nice.
  • “The Devil Wears Prada.” Meryl Streep’s signature perfume, the steak lunch from Smith & Wollensky’s every day, the coffee Anne Hathaway is forced to carry trays of. I can smell it all.
  • “Waitress.” I’d love to smell all of Keri Russell’s pies!
  • “Eat Pray Love.” For the smells of delicious food, tropical climates, and Javier Bardem’s sweat.
  • “Annie Hall.” I predict: pastrami sandwiches and Woody Allen’s B.O. Oh, and the lobster scene.
  • “The Dark Knight Rises.” Since this movie is gonna go big, why not take it all the way and have us smell Catwoman’s pleather?
