Morning Quickies: Lawsuit Against “The Help” Author Kathryn Stockett Dropped

  • Yesterday, a Mississippi judge threw out a $75K lawsuit against Kathryn Stockett, author of The Help, by Stockett’s brother’s maid. Ablene Cooper claimed the author used her likeness without permission in her novel about white women and their black maids (including one named Abilene) in ’60s Jackson, MS. The judge dismissed the case because a one-year statute of limitations had passed between the time Stockett gave Cooper a copy of the book and the lawsuit was filed. Stockett has long denied the characters in the book were based on real life people. [NPR]
