This charticle isn’t perfect, but it makes a fair enough point: the women of science fiction TV shows like “Firefly,” “Star Trek” and “Xena: Warrior Princess,” taken as an aggregate, are a different breed from the desperate housewives/real housewives you see elsewhere. It’s true that for sci-fi women, strength, independence and intelligence tend to be emphasized the most. But the “Women of Prime Time” part of this equation left out more than a few mainstream, feminist-y characters. Where’s Peggy Olsen and Joan Holloway? Where are Rory and Lorelai Gilmore?
