Morning Quickies: Jane Fonda Talks Body Image & Bulimia

  • Jane Fonda opened up to Harper’s Bazaar about her lifelong body image issues. “I wasn’t very happy from, I would say, puberty to 50? It took me a long time,” she told the magazine. “It was in my 40s, and if you suffer from bulimia, the older you get, the worse it gets. It takes longer to recover from a bout. I had a career, I was winning awards, I was supporting nonprofits, I had a family.” Eventually Fonda just had to quit: “I had to make a choice: I live or I die.” She says her father, the actor Henry Fonda, made her feel like her only value was in her appearance. “I was raised in the ’50s,” she said. “I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered, frankly. He was a good man, and I was mad for him, but he sent messages to me that fathers should not send: Unless you look perfect, you’re not going to be loved.” How sad/fortunate for her that in late adulthood, she has finally found peace with her body. • Palin pile-on redux: Mercede Johnston, sister of Levi Johnston, posed for Playboy and talked smacked about Sarah Palin (of course). “I think she’d have had a mental breakdown [if elected president],” Johnston told the magazine. “As governor she quit on us. What does that say about her?” I don’t disagree on this one, but you still have to consider the source. [NY Post]
  • Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds may be on the rebound — with each other. [Celebrity Dirty Laundry]

  • ABC announced Friday that “Desperate Housewives” is wrapping up after its eighth season. Remember when Gabby sleeping with her hot teenage gardener seemed so scandalous? [People]
  • Selena Gomez is apparently mad that Justin Bieber has “bad boy hip hop friends” like Sean Kingston, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown. They fight about it, Justin cries, and friends of Selena tell the gossip tabs “it’s hard seeing a little 17-year-old crying and saying he loves her.” [Celebitchy]
  • Colin Farrell has opened up about his seven-year-old son, James, who struggles with Angelman syndrome, a little-known disease. James has no verbal speech and didn’t walk until he was nearly four, but Colin says he’s an extremely happy kid who smiles all the time. Aww. [OK Magazine]
  • “Project Runway” is spinning off with a show called “Project Runway All-Stars,” which will be hosted by model Angela Lindvall and feature designers Issac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman as judges. That’s a pretty “whatever” group to me. However, the all-star cast is a lot more exciting: Kenley Collins, Austin Scarlett, and Mondo Guerra! [People]
  • An extreme couponer was arrested for stealing newspapers to get more coupons and “feed her addiction.” I know I shouldn’t laugh, but this is too funny. [ONTD]
