Wait, A Real Life Barbie Movie Is Happening?

Every time I watch the new “90210,” I have a very distracting thought—Trevor Donovan, who plays Teddy on the show, looks life a walking, talking version of Ken. I mean, give the man some hair gel and he is good to go. So I was highly amused today when I heard that he had met with producers about the possibility of playing everyone’s favorite plastic hunk without junk in a live-action movie. My next reaction was—wait, someone’s making a live-action Barbie movie?

Apparently, the answer is yes. Universal Pictures announced two years that they were beginning development on this project. They tapped Laurence Mark, the producer of “DreamGirls” and “Julia & Julia,” to make it happen. “Barbie is the most famous doll in history, a unique cultural icon in the world of brands,” said Universal Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger. “So many representations of Barbie frequent pop culture, but never before has she been brought to life in a motion picture. We’re grateful to Mattel for entrusting us with this extraordinary opportunity.”

I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised by this news considering that “Battleship” is about to hit theaters and “Candy Land: The Movie” is in works, along with a slew of other movies based on games and toys. But this leads me to a few questions. First, who will play Barbie? And second, since this idea was conceived of in 2009, when Ken and Barbie were on the outs, will the two be together in the flick or will Barbie be single and ready to mingle?
