What’s Inside An MTV “Real World” Cast Member Contract: Humiliation, STDs And Possible Crazy People

Would you sign an employment contract that warned you of humiliation, exposure to STDs, physical violence, or death? Me neither. But that’s all in a day’s work for cast members of MTV’s “The Real World.” The Village Voice got its hands on a 30-page, unsigned contract for the lovable drunks on “The Real World” and let’s just say MTV lawyers have got their asses covered. You can read all the highlights of “The Real World” contract over at The Village Voice’s blog. Here are just a few of the delights (paraphrased) that cast members sign up for when they stop being polite and start getting real:

  • You may be humiliated and explicitly portrayed “in a false light.”
  • If you contract AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases while filming [“gonorrhea, herpes, syphilis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), Chlamydia, scabies (crabs),’hepatitis, genital warts, and other communicable and sexually transmitted diseases or Pregnancy; etc”], MTV is not responsible.
  • Interacting with other cast members carries the risk of “non-consensual physical contact” and should you contract AIDS, etc. during such an interaction, MTV is not responsible.
  • You grant the Producer blanket rights to your life story. The Producer can do pretty much anything they want with your life story, including misrepresent it.
  • You can’t change your physical appearance during filming, without the Producer’s express permission.

Scabies, you say? Show me where to sign. [Village Voice]
