M.I.A. is one of the many famous friends of Amy Winehouse‘s who is simultaneously devastated about the loss of their friend but seemed to have some instinct that tragedy was on the way for her. Over the weekend, M.IA. posted a song demo on Soundcloud in tribute to Amy and “all my friends who died at 27.”
Give it a listen after the jump.
Some sample lyrics:
Said your all mouth and no brains
all rock stars go to heaven
you said you’ll be dead at 27
when we drunk in a English tavern
Took you to the clinic
to get you clean but you couldn’t
said in two days ur 27 and and ur destiny was comin
Now, in the Twitter post where M.I.A. directed attention to the song, she wrote, “I recorded this song B4 vickileekx and never put it out. its a unfinished demo. R.I.P. A.M.Y.” Vickileekx is the mixtape (the title is an alternate spelling of Wikileaks) M.I.A. released in December, which means the song was written before then. This has me wondering, is the “you” in this song specifically Winehouse? Did Amy feel fated to die this year and express that to M.I.A? Did M.I.A go to a clinic with Winehouse—or is this more metaphorical and less literal?
