The Casey Anthony Outrage Bubbles Over

Ever since Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, there has been an explosion of emotion about the crime online. Oodles of famous folks, from Miley Cyrus to Rainn Wilson, have chimed in to express their disbelief. After the jump, some of the most extreme reactions so far to yesterday’s (somewhat) unexpected verdict.

  • Shortly after the verdict was read, Kim Kardashian tweeted, “WHAT!!!!???!!!! CASEY ANTHONY FOUND NOT GUILTY!!!! I am speechless!!!” She later added, “Is this now an open case? Do they attempt to arrest someone else? I am so confused! How do these jurors not believe she’s guilty????” Some quickly jumped on these tweets because Kim’s dad, Robert Kardashian, happened to be OJ Simpson’s defense lawyer—another huge case in recent memory where the evidence seemed clear to the public, but the jury voted in the “not guilty” direction. One Twitterer wrote, “Kim Kardashian doesn’t understand how lawyers can defend ‘bad people.’ I guess daddy never introduced her to OJ,” which seems to sum up this line of thinking. However, Kim isn’t backing down. “It’s nuts people think just because I was close to the OJ trial I can’t have my own opinion on the Casey Anthony case?” she responded. • Speaking of the OJ parallel, Marcia Clark—who prosecuted SImpson—has penned a story for The Daily Beast titled “Worse Than O.J.!” “Sick, shaken, in disbelief. As I listened to the verdicts in the Casey Anthony case, acquitting her of the homicide of her baby girl, I relived what I felt back when court clerk Deirdre Robertson read the verdicts in the Simpson case,” she begins. “What mother sees that her child has drowned in the pool and not only fails to call 911, but then duct tapes her mouth and nose, hides the body in the trunk for days, and then dumps it in the woods? And then goes out to party and lies for a whopping 31 days about where the baby is? … So it was a circumstantial case. Most cases are.” [The Daily Beast]
  • Nancy Grace of HLN has been following this case since Caylee Anthony first went missing. She broadcasted as the verdict was read and did not mince words. “As the defense sits by and has their champagne toast after that not-guilty verdict, somewhere out there, the Devil is dancing tonight,” she said. While some have applauded Grace for her comments, others have accused her of media assassination. [NY Daily News]
  • Roseanne Barr took to Twitter writing, “Casey—you were so smart to hide the body in the swamp! You Got away with killing your baby! … Idiots must never again be allowed on juries—smart people must begin to serve their country before idiots kill us all!” [Huffington Post]
  • Entenmann’s—yes, the company that makes your favorite crumb cake—has been chastised for their gross tweet after the verdict, “Who’s #notguilty about eating all the tasty treats they want?!” They have formerly apologized for the bad judgment. “The truth is, our team was leveraging the trending topics and moving so fast they neglected to see what the hashtag was related to,” a spokesperson explained. [CNET]
  • Jeanine Pirro, the former judge and district attorney who sat in on the trial as a commenter for Fox News, says the verdict is leading her to question the justice system. “I have two words to describe my reaction: ‘shocked’ and ‘speechless,’” she said. “When a jury returns such a curious verdict, it points up the national obsession we have with ‘CSI’ and DNA, and I think it has destroyed our ability to employ common sense. I almost feel like I’m living in the twilight zone.” [The Daily Beast]
  • Jill Zarin of “The Real Housewives of New York” tweeted, “I can NOT believe Casey Anthony was found NOT Guilty! What … the glove didn’t fit. This is terrible. I am SHOCKED.” [PopEater]
  • Carson Daly added, “The jury better get into hiding.” [PopEater]
  • As for a dissenting opinion, I’ve looked high and low and only found one—Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks. “The jury did the right thing in the Casey Anthony trial,” she tweeted. “It’s not American to allow murder convictions be based on theory and not evidence … Thank God our judicial system isn’t run by Nancy Grace! We’d all be behind bars, no questions asked.” Just when everyone had thoroughly forgotten about that George W. Bush comment, I bet she’ll get a little backlash for that one. [Kiim-FM 99.5]

Meanwhile, experts are saying that Anthony could be released from custody as soon as tomorrow. And many don’t think she’ll have a hard time finding work. Some are estimating that she could make $750K to $1 million for a memoir, and that TV networks will be bidding to secure the first interview. Oh, and that studios will be clamoring for the movie rights to her story. And—ugh—if not, she does already have that porn offer.
