Javier Colon: 8 Things To Know About The First Winner Of “The Voice”

Javier Colon is to “The Voice” what Kelly Clarkson was to “American Idol.” On last night’s season finale, Javier beat out Dia Frampton, Vicci Martinez, and the awesome lady baldy Beverly McClellan to become the first winner of our new favorite singing show. He won by a margin of two percent of the vote, clenching a recording contract with Universal Republic Records and a cool $100,000. So who exactly is this guy? Find out after the jump.

  1. Javier hails from Connecticut and is 33 years old. He’s half Dominican and half Puerto Rican, and attended the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music.

  • Ever since he did this amazing rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” on the premiere of “The Voice,” Javier has been a fan favorite. Last night, he did a duet of “Landslide” with Stevie Nicks. “I’m pretty speechless. That was one of the most beautiful duets I’ve ever heard in my life,” Adam Levine, his mentor on the show, said. “You’re one of my heroes. Good luck. You deserve to win this competition.”

  • Javier started out as the vocalist for a funk band called EmcQ. From there, he was asked to sing for the Derek Trucks Band, lead by the Allman Brothers guitarist. In 2002, he decided to go to solo and Capitol Record released his album, Javier, which cracked the Billboard 200 thanks to the song “Crazy.” But his next album fell on deaf ears. As did the EP he released in January. As Colon told People, “I’ve been at this a long time, and it wears on you when you keep getting doors shut in your face, and you keep getting told you are not good enough to get another record deal and they decide not to, quote-unquote, waste their time on you.” Not anymore!
  • Javier is a family man—he has a wife and two daughters. “When you become a father, nothing really matters but taking care of your kids,” he’s said. Awww.
  • If “The Voice” hadn’t come along, Javier was leaning toward becoming a music teacher. “It was time to put up or move on,” he said. “I’ve got a degree in music education, and I would love to have been able to go into a school system and teach kids and inspire them as I was inspired as a kid to follow music.”
  • Did we mention he’s funny? In addition to asking Christina Aguilera, “Why’d it take you so long?” to push her button during his audition, he apparently played some pranks on some of his fellow contestants. “He spoke to me in a British accent and he made me believe he was English for about 20 minutes!” one explained.
  • He’s also a master golfer. Who knew?
  • As for his musical influences, there are many. On his Facebook profile, Javier credits: Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, James Taylor, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Jose Feliciano, Baby Face, Boyz II Men. Here’s hoping he’ll someday cover “Motown Philly.”

So, were you excited to see Javier win on “The Voice”?
