As a pale blond I’ve always been very serious about sun protection. When I was in middle school, my volleyball team went to a tournament in California, and while my teammates lay out by the pool slathered up in tanning oil, I sat in the shade wearing a wide-brimmed hat and approximately two gallons of sunscreen. My militant sunblocking ways were validated when my dad, who is also pale and blond, was diagnosed with melanoma a few years ago. He’s okay now, but doctors had to cut out a cancerous chunk of his nose and the whole ordeal was very scary. I know that wearing sunscreen can be a pain, but it’s so worth it, and choosing the right sunscreen can make all the difference.
