If you lived anywhere near my apartment building, you would have heard a dramatic scream of “Noooooooo!” circa 9 a.m. this morning. Why? Because I read that Leah Messer and Corey Simms of “Teen Mom 2“—aka the couple I dubbed the most inspiring on television—have split after just six months of marriage. Apparently, it was Leah who did the leaving, moving out of their family home after a series of fights over money. Yesterday, she was spotted at her local courthouse and a clerk confirmed that, while she hadn’t filed anything, she had picked up divorce or custody papers.
This news makes me very, very sad.I loved that Leah and Corey, after a rocky period following the births of their twin daughters Ali and Aleeah, had reunited and fully committed to their relationship. They seemed so sweet together and I loved watching them with their daughters, as a family. I loved how they supported each other as they went through medical test after medical test to determine what was wrong with Ali’s legs. I even cried when they exchanged vows at their wedding.
So, what happened to change things so quickly? Supposedly, Corey made several substantial withdrawls from their bank account, including one to buy a truck. (You’ll remember that he gave his up to raise money to support his daughters.) “He and Leah have been living apart for two weeks now, and he has been very happy,” one friend told In Touch magazine. Another added, “He [withdrew the money] without telling Leah, even though the money is mostly her earnings from MTV. When she found out, they had a vicious fight and she left him… She always said she didn’t want a broken home for her girls, since her father left her family, but now she is ready to give that up and leave Corey for good.”
Insert big sigh here.
