A group is offering a scholarship to white men only, according to conservative news web site The Daily Caller. Any male Texas resident who is at least 25 percent Caucasian with a 3.0 GPA and financial need can apply for a $500 scholarship from The Former Majority Association for Equality. The group is concerned that, unlike women, African-Americans or Latinos or Asian/Pacific Islanders or other groups, white men do not have scholarships specifically for them. However, the group’s mission statement claims it is only trying to fill a gap, rather than promote white supremacy:
“One obstacle that we immediately anticipate is to not appear racist or racially motivated. We do not advocate white supremacy, nor do we enable any individual that does. We do not accept donations from organizations affiliated with any sort of white supremacy or hate group. We have no hidden agenda to promote racial bigotry or segregation. FMAE’s existence is dedicated around one simple principle, to provide monetary aid for education to white males who need it.”
As a woman, I don’t necessarily have a problem with a male-only scholarship. I’m less comfortable with the Caucasian aspect. However, I am overall skeptical, considering some men/races/social classes/sexual orientations immediately begin screaming about how disadvantaged they are becoming as soon as they lose a little of their long-held privilege. I have little patience for that kind of whining, although I think there are compelling arguments to be made on both sides the affirmative action/educational opportunities discussion.
What are your thoughts on a scholarship only for white males?
