Thank you, Cupid, for this Valentine’s Day miracle. After breaking up in 2004, Barbie and Ken have decided to get back together. Yesterday, Barbie, who apparently has a Facebook page even though she’s made of sculpted plastic, wrote a status update that read, “Who knows … maybe I’ll have a Valentine this year.” Then this morning, she changed her status to “In a Relationship.”Lisa McKnight, the vice president of marketing at Mattel, is ready to explain. “[Ken and Barbie] were reunited as costars, as you know, on the set of ‘Toy Story 3.’ As we like to put it, they found they were kind of missing each other. … To be fair to them, they have been together for about 43 years, so you know, I think everyone needs a break. So they took a little break and had fun out on their own and were certainly out and about, but I think ultimately, again, they were destined for each other.”
Wait, should someone tell this woman that they are just dolls?
Evidently, others are confused about this Barbie and Ken not really being real thing, too. Last night, Mattel threw a “Celebrating Ken” party at Christie’s auction house, with menswear designers dressing up models to look like the iconic guy. Midway through the soiree, Barbie checked into the party via Twitter, but didn’t show her face for any plastic PDA.
Uh, scandalous? Maybe she was with that surfer guy, Blaine, who she briefly hooked up with when she was sans Ken? The world may never know. And I’m okay with that.
