When I was in college, I started doing this innovative thing with my clothes: I wore dresses over jeans. It was not cool. It was so not cool that one of my coworkers at the college paper wrote in my bio, “Julie started the dresses over jeans trend–AND WE WISH SHE WOULD STOP.” But then! Lo, some three years later, EVERYBODY was wearing dresses over jeans. Marc Jacobs was putting dresses over jeans down the frigging runway. We now have an entire confusing category of clothing–the dress/shirt or shirt/dress–created from this trend. I feel vindicated: I was ahead of the curve on the dress/jeans combo. Maybe I even invented it (probably not).
Have you ever been on the cutting edge of discovering a new fashion phenom or pervasive trend?
