Jessica’s Favorite Things Of 2010
The blog Your It List has asked a bunch of cool tastemaker types to reveal their favorite things of 2010. They didn’t ask us for ours, but we’re going to share ‘em anyway. You’ve read Amelia’s, Julie‘s, Joanne‘s and Kate‘s. Now here’s Jessica’s … Favorite Movie: Does it have to be a movie that was in theaters in 2010? [No. -- Editor] “An Education,” starring Carey Mulligan, Peter Saarsgard and my girl crush, Rosamund Pike, was one of the few movies I saw in theaters this year that I loved. But 99.5 percent of the films I watch are not from this year and they are livestreamed on Netflix Instant. I am Netflix Instant’s #1 fan, no doubt. Among the best movies I watch this year (all of which I recommend highly): “Two Days In Paris,” “Amreeka,” “American Violet,” “Paradise Now,” “Roman Polanski: Wanted And Desired,” “Priceless,” and “Manhattan.” Even though I didn’t like “Up,” I won’t deny it made me sob.
Favorite Album: My music tastes are really eclectic: Kings of Leon’s new album rocks; Kanye West’s new album is AMAZING; Robyn and Christina Aguilera’s albums kept me awake during some 4 p.m. afternoon slumps; and I’m embarrassed to admit it but I’ve written many a Frisky post while listening to Taylor Swift’s Speak Now. Mostly, though, I listen to Pandora Radio. Pomplamoose, Jem, Count Basie, Dexter Gordon and Britney Spears radio are my go-to stations, depending on my caffeine level/mood.
Favorite Book: My reading tastes are really eclectic, too. I’m in a book club with a bunch of smarty-pants ladies who went to Williams, but I also love to read lighter, fluffier books for pleasure. This year I also made a concerted effort to read more well-known books by famous writers because … frankly, the serious-to-trashy ratio was a bit off. Some books I really loved this year: Let The Great World Spin by Colum McCann; The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas; Lolita by Vladmir Nabakov; The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz; The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot; The Help by Katherine Stockett; and Finn by Jon Clinch. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my two favorite magazines, too: Bitch and Bust.
Favorite TV Show: “30 Rock”! Tina Fey 4 Eva! I’ve watched four seasons of old episodes this year, also on Netflix Instant. I’m a big “Mad Men” fan, too, but sometimes it feels like everyone on that show is a terrible person. I try to never miss an episode of “Saturday Night Live” and I’ll admit to watching a bit of “Dancing With The Stars” and “Platinum Weddings.” (Don’t judge me.)
Favorite Art Exhibit: I loved the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. My best friend’s mom got stoned with him back in the ’70s, so I am totally fascinated by anything Warhol. It was also cool to finally see Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party” for the first time, too. (I really want to go see the women Pop artists exhibits at the Brooklyn Museum before it closes in January — Frisky field trip, anyone?!) I enjoyed the exhibit of female photographers and the abstract expressionism exhibit at MOMA, too.
Favorite Style Trend: Blue eyeshadow. I like the turquoise from NARS. I’m also in love with my Dior holiday collection eyeshadow quad.
Favorite YouTube Video: That’s easy. Baby panda videos! I’ve seen all of them. This one is cute:
What Are You Most Excited For In 2011? Paying off IRS and college loan debt. Also, I’m going to a wedding in Seattle in August and I’m looking forward to going back. Last trip was full of great eats and even better shopping!
Who Do You Most Want To Smooch On New Year’s Eve? I’ll take my boyfriend David, Clive Owen or Ed Westwick. Whichever one is nearest, really.
What Do You Want The Most As A Holiday Gift? I’m preeeeeetty sure David is giving me a pair of Louboutins. If that turns out to be true, I’ll be so friggin’ happy. I’ll let everyone know next week, OK?
