MTV To Air An Abortion Special, “No Easy Decision,” Starring Markai Durham
It’s about time! MTV will air a special called “No Easy Decision” in which Markai Durham, a teen on the latest season of “16 And Pregnant,” has an abortion. As first reported by Crushable, Markai got pregnant by her boyfriend James shortly after giving birth to baby Za’karia and decided to end the pregnancy. The special will air on December 28.
Markai Durham is a perfect example of the type of woman who has an abortion — not because she’s a teen, but because she’s a mama. According to a 2008 paper in The Journal of Family Issues, 61 percent of American women who have abortions are already mothers. Let me repeat that again and put it in bold so I can make sure you see it: 61 percent of American women who have abortions are already mothers. The woman getting screamed at with the words “BABY KILLER!” outside the abortion clinic probably has a baby or two or three back at home. The responsibility she feels towards her existing child/children and the conditions of motherhood not being “ideal” (just lost her job; husband is a drug abuser; house just got devastated by a tornado; whatever) are the top two reasons a mother aborts when she gets pregnant again.
That will not stop the public from judging Markai Durham, who has the mixed bag of misfortune/fortune to be living life in the public eye, courtesy of MTV. Now, for those of you who might be thinking, But doesn’t Markai get paid by MTV? Can’t she afford to have another kid?, let me emphasize: That is not the point. The point is that for whatever reason, Markai Durham does not want another kid. Maybe it’s about money, maybe it’s about her physical health, maybe it’s about her mental health, maybe it’s about the guy who knocked her again up being a bad dude. Who knows? It’s not for us to decide what she should do. Period.
Despite her decision to have a baby the first (I’m assuming) time she got pregnant, Markai Durham is also pro-choice. Crushable directed us to Markai’s Facebook fan page, in which she lashes out at the Judgey McJudgersons:
“Its Not A Baby At All Until I Think You 3rd Trimester (I Could Be Mistaken) Its Only A Fetus Which Means Its Only A GROUP OF CELLS TRYING TO FORM INTO SOMEONE. && Its Not Our Right To Judge Wo…men / Girls Who Do Get An Abortion. Thats Like Judging Someone Because There Gay Or Black Or Whatever. Its Not Right For People To Lash Out At Women/ Girls Who Made The Right Decision For Them && Their Family. Point Blank. && Even Though They Have Created SOMETHING That CAN Be The Most Beautiful Thing. SOMETIMES Women/ Girls Aren’t Ready For That Big Of A Responsibilty. NO MATTER IF THEY OPENED THEIR LEGS / PANTS.”
I, for one, do not look forward to the giant-ass kerfuffle this will surely cause with not only advertisers but people who think MTV is “glamorizing” abortion. (Just like they said “16 & Pregnant” and “Teen Mom” were “glamorizing” teen pregnancy)! Hell’s bells, nothing about teen pregnancy or abortion is remotely glamorous and illuminating young adults to that fact is a damned public service. Anyone who posits otherwise is just ignorant.
