You know we’re huge “Mad Men” fans here, so we were truly excited to read your favorite quips from the resident silver fox of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, Roger Sterling, Jr. Thank you for taking us on a short trip down “Mad Men” memory lane and for providing your insight into the character. Find out who won a copy of Sterling’s Gold: Wit and Wisdom of an Ad Man by Roger Sterling after the jump. Katrina:
“Roger [on his office's white walls]: ‘With my hair you can’t even see me in here.’
Roger Sterling is probably my favorite ‘Mad Men’ character, just for saying things like this. He delivers most of the humor in the show not only through his blatantly racist/sexist comments, but also through off-the-wall irreverence for pretty much everything. It’s usually right before–or during–a serious conversation that Roger lightens up the mood through his random outbursts on everything from ‘Chinamen’ to decor.
It’s also interesting that, reading this at a deeper level, he might be saying something about himself. The fact that he, as an aging remnant of the ‘old days,’ is being phased out not only in his new office but in the ad world in general. But then again, Sterling never does quite let you know what he’s thinking. He keeps just about everyone guessing about his true motives. He’s an alcohol- and sex-fueled enigma, that one.”
“‘Look, I want to tell you something because you’re very dear to me. And I hope you understand that it comes from the bottom of my damaged, damaged heart. You are the finest piece of ass I’ve ever had and I don’t care who knows it. I am so glad that I got to roam those hillsides.’
Roger is telling this to Joan in season one after he had his heart attack in the office. While it’s not the quipiest of his quotes, it’s my favorite because it not only reminds me of my friend who got me hooked into the show. But it also speaks to the person that Roger is, not able to give a sincere compliment and making light of serious situations.”
