“Hellcats” Cram Session: The Internet Sure Loves Racy Cheerleader Photos

Bust out your pom-poms, ‘cause tonight is “Hellcats” night! Since The Frisky’s own Kate Torgovnick happens to be an expert on college cheerleading—after all, the show is based on her book, CHEER!: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders—every Wednesday we have her sound off on how the show stacks up to reality.

Tonight on “Hellcats,” naked pics of squad co-captain Alice are leaked on the interwebs and quickly became the most-viewed pages on Lancer University campus. So how realistic is this plot? Unfortunately, extremely. Rebecca Manns of the University of Louisville knows first hand what this is like. When dirty photos of her ended up online in 2007, she quickly became the most Googled name of the week. Two explanations were given for how the private images of Manns cropped up online: Some say the images were stolen off her camera and others say her boyfriend posted them. Either way, Manns was not only kicked off the Louisville cheerleading squad—she was kicked out of school. Not to mention having to live with the embarrassment.

A year later, a group of Sacramento Kings cheerleaders found themselves in hot water when images of them pawing at each other and exposing their thongs were leaked online. They were luckier than Manns and weren’t fired, but the team did release a press release denouncing the incident.

A few months later, Arizona State University disbanded its cheerleading squad for the year when images of some members posing sexily in their underwear were posted on a blog.

And these aren’t the only squads where private photos have caused issues—the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Orange Coast College dance team, the Owen High School cheerleaders from North Carolina, and Cleveland Cavalier dancers have all dealt with leaked photos of their members.

So, will there be consequences for Alice for taking racy photos? Will whoever leaked the images get equal punishment? And more importantly, will the Hellcats at large get in trouble for the incident, too? Guess we’ll have to watch and find out.

Oh, and read more about these and lots more cheerleading scandals here.
