Do Not Want: The Brazilian Blowout

We’ve been hearing about the warnings of formaldehyde in Brazilian Blowout treatments for a few months now, but this New York Times article really caused us to question if we’d ever do the beauty treatment again. Increasingly, salon owners are setting up ventilation rooms or having their employees and customers wear masks to avoid inhaling fumes, which is a pretty good indication that you’re getting exposed to serious chemicals. Further, it’s very vague and ambiguous at the moment as to whether the amount of formaldehyde in Brazilian Blowouts is harmful (you’ll hear several different assertions). It makes us think that if you can’t get an answer, best to just avoid it altogether. One more thing to note: you should also be careful about any other Keratin products or Keratin-related treatments, as these have been found to contain carcinogens as well. Do your research; ask questions; check your labels! [New York Times]
