Leonardo DiCaprio To Play H. H. Holmes And Jay Gatsby

Leonardo DiCaprio is having a big moment at the … moment. He has been cast in the lead of two movies I cannot wait for—”The Great Gatsby” and “The Devil in the White City.”

Let’s start with “The Devil.” Tom Cruise actually jumped first to secure the option to Erik Larsen’s book, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America. The non-fiction best-seller interweaves the story of Daniel Burnham, the architect of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and H. H. Holmes, a sadistic charmer who confessed to murdering 27 people during the fair and is thought to have killed many more. But Leonardo really, really wanted to portray the role of the blue-eyed, sweet-talking serial killer. So he created a rival project to Tom’s based on other material. Eventually, he got the book option, too. [EW]

And then there’s “Gatsby.” Leonardo is the lead in the flick, which will be directed by Baz Luhrmann, the man who made us lust after Leo in “Romeo + Juliet.” Daisy, on the other hand, has yet to be cast. Sources say that Rebecca Hall and Amanda Seyfried are leading the race for the role, but that Keira Knightley, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson, and Natalie Portman are also in the running. Why not Kate Winslet?! [NYMag.com]
