Dear Wendy Updates: “Life Part Deux” Responds

It’s time again for “Dear Wendy Updates,” a feature where people I’ve given advice to in the past let us know whether they followed the advice and how they’re doing today. After the jump, we hear from “Life Part Deux” the 54-year-old divorced woman whose new boyfriend traveled so much for work, she only saw him once a month for a few days at a time. “I got divorced because I believed I deserved more in a relationship.” She wrote. “Now, I’m thinking that I still deserve more in a relationship … but I’m dreading going through with breaking up and looking for someone else again.” After the jump, find out if she broke up with him.

Thank you so much, Wendy! Your advice is pretty much what I’ve been hearing from everyone I’ve spilled my guts to. I know it may hurt when I tell him. But, if I don’t, I’ll hurt myself more from the isolation. He is a terrific guy, and I trust his fidelity (his ex cheated on him, so that’s something he’s not going to do to anyone else). I think I probably pushed for a commitment when I really didn’t need/want one. So, I’m pretty sure he won’t mind me backing up on that and having a more casual relationship. Again, I thank you for your reply. — Life Part Duex

That’s great, LPD. And I hope you’ll also take my and the readers’ advice to cultivate more of a life for yourself outside dating: hobbies, new friendships and interests. It’s wonderful that you’re enjoying a second act in romance after your divorce, but (wo)man can’t subsist on that alone. You need friends, too, so shift some of your focus on re-building a social network.

If you’re someone I’ve given advice to in the past, I’d love to hear from you, too. Email me at {encode=”[email protected]” title=”[email protected]”} with a link to the original post, and let me know whether you followed the advice and how you’re doing now.
