Reader Revealed: The Well-Rounded ErikaWells

Hands down, the best thing about working at The Frisky is our amazing readers. We so heart all of your witty, thoughtful, and informative comments—heck, we even appreciate the mean ones. Sometimes, we can’t help but wonder about the faces behind the avatars. So we decided to launch a weekly column where we learn all about a Frisky reader. After the jump, meet ErikaWells, one of our most prolific commenters. Please state your name, age, and location for The Friskyverse.

I’m Erika, I’m 29 years old, and I just moved into a new house in Connecticut. This is the longest I’ve lived in one place since adulthood, because I grew up in New Jersey, moved to Connecticut in high school, went to college in Delaware, and then lived in San Diego, New York City, and then finally … back to Connecticut.

How did you find the site?

I definitely wandered onto it via CNN. I work in an extremely seasonal industry (oil), so the summers are very slow, and I have lots of time to peruse things on the internet. We make up for that in the winter, thankfully!

What do you do all day, other than follow The Frisky, which is totally condoned?

Well, like I said, my day job is in the oil business, but my passion is definitely animal rights, especially relating to primates (apes, monkeys, etc.). I’ve spent my years since college educating myself on the issues involved in primatology and meeting some of the key people in that field, so now I’m currently writing my first book about primate welfare. Most people don’t even know much about primates, but to me they’re so intelligent and sensitive that it’s fascinating, and I could go on and on about it. Besides that, I also like to play guitar and piano, I just re-started yoga, and I try to spend time as much time as I can with my husband and sweet dog.

Relationship status?

I married my high-school sweetheart in June 2009 after dating him for 12 years, with two short breakups which were mainly due to living apart during college. We kinda always knew we were supposed to be together. He’s my other half.

What is your fave post in recent Frisky history?

Hmm … tricky tricky. I love What Are You Wearing Today, because it’s fun to see what other people are wearing for some reason. I also like the Girl Talks about living with medical issues, because for the last seven years I’ve been living with a benign brain tumor and am figuring out how to deal with it, without relying on traditional medication. It interests me to read about how other people handle the fun things life can throw at us.

What are your pop culture guilty pleasures?

I wish it weren’t true, but anything Tyra-related, including “America’s Next Top Model“. Also “Teen Mom” sucks me in. That’s it though, honestly. I’m proud to say I’ve never watched “Jersey Shore” or “The Real Housewives of Whatever.” I do think The Frisky counts as a pop culture guilty pleasure, especially Tabloid Cheat Sheet. It keeps me relevant in the world of crazies, which is so not necessary but a nice break from reality nonetheless.

Can you share your most embarrassing dating story? We always share ours. It’s only fair.

I’ve been with my husband for so long that I haven’t dated as much as other people may have. But I have two things that happened when I had just met him that were rather mortifying. (Keep in mind I was 16 years old at the time.) The first event happened the first time I met his family. They lived in a nice, new, clean condo and I managed to spill pink lemonade all over the white wall in their kitchen. Go me. The second event I’ve actually written about before on The Frisky. Future Husband came over for dinner, and my dad, who likes messing around with me, casually mentioned during dinner that my favorite TV show was “Blossom.” I, of course, denied it, being that it wasn’t true at all and this was in the late ’90s and thus way after the heyday of “Blossom.” It just made it look like I was defensive and embarrassed over my undying adoration of “Blossom” and my dad successfully made me look like a dork in front of my crush.

Who is your celebrity doppelganger?

I’ve had a few mentioned, from Claire Danes to Emily Blunt to Jennifer Connelly. I don’t mind looking like either, but it would be neat to have a cool English accent like Emily Blunt.

What type of skivvies do you have on right now?

Nothing too exciting. Pink bikini from Victoria’s Secret Pink. Had I known ahead of time I would be doing this, I could have busted out something special.

What is your secret talent?

Ice carving. First place at the CT Restaurant Show, baby! And I have double-jointed feet so if I really try, I can extend them to be almost-backwards while I’m standing up. Super sexy, that move.

Favorite book, movie, musician or band?

I am bad at making decisions, but I’ll try. I’m kinda all over the place:

Book: The Great Ape Project or Gone With The Wind.
Movie: “Goodfellas,” “Serendipity,” or “Love Actually.”
Band: Nirvana, Weezer, Neil Young, or Aerosmith.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Johnny Depp, duh.

What’s something you hope to see more of on The Frisky?

I like the real-life accounts that people write, whether it’s dealing with family issues, medical problems, or personal things. I find that more interesting than some of the really junky celebrity stuff or pictures of outrageous fashions that that have nothing to do with my life.
