HBO Creating A Series About The Porn Industry

Being the n’er-do-well pervert that I am, I love a good show about sex. And while Showtime seemed to beat other networks to the punch with my no-babysitter favorite “Red Shoe Diaries” and then “Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” HBO has recently brought out the big guns with “Hung.” Now they’re working on a show about the porn industry! Apparently, the executive producers of “Entourage” and “Boardwalk Empire,” Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson, are working on the one-hour drama with controversial writer James Frey. The show will follow a Midwestern girl who’s moved to Los Angeles after her boyfriend convinces her to become a star and hooks up with a video company which is under siege from its internet competitors. The cast will consist of both actors and porn stars. Frey says, “We’re going to make a sprawling epic about the porn business in LA. We’re going to tell the type of stories no one else has told before, and go places no one has gone before.” Well, it wouldn’t take much to do that, but we’re more concerned about whether or not it will suck. I’m all for an inside look at the porn industry and who better to lay it out for us than Dirk Diggler himself? And Frey is probably a good choice to pen the pilot since the guy obviously has a very vivid imagination. I just hope it doesn’t get all name-droppy like “Entourage”—I feel like that show likes to rely a little too heavily on guest appearances, which would be too easy to do in a porn-themed show. The pornography industry is full of characters—I met a porn star (friend of a friend) last year whose first words to me were literally, “I love black c**k.” These are the kind of people they’re dealing with—horny sociopaths and stuff. So, if this show is not totally awesome, they really weren’t trying very hard. [NY Post]
