Men Go Matte So As To Appear “In Control”?
The latest in metrosexual men’s beauty trends: mattifying beauty products. For ladies, matte beauty products are often a choice of aesthetics, especially in summer. Do you want a flat texture or that “dewy glow”? For guys who aren’t afraid to use skin care products, many are opting for mattifying lotions to take away shine. (And maybe that’s a good thing because a guy with a “dewy complexion” doesn’t sound all that attractive, now does he?) According to The New York Times, this trend has been growing, and the market for mattifying products has increased over 50 percent in the past two years. So why are guys reaching for the matte stuff? One guy says, “I don’t want to look like Mr. Oily Face.” (Mr. Oily Face!) But a GQ editor says it’s more about exercising control: “If your face is oily and sweaty, it looks like you’re not in the control of the situation,” and one dermatologist explains that his patients “worry that their glistening faces might put them “at a competitive disadvantage.” Sounds kind of ridiculous, but we sort of see how this could be true. Would the handsome but sweaty guy win over the non-sweaty dude? We say probably. You? [New York Times]
