Quotable: Eminem Declares His Support For Gay Marriage
“I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want.”
– Eminem, who has written lyrics considered homophobic in the past, declares his support for gay marriage in an interview with The New York Times. I find it fascinating that Eminem supports marriage equality, but Elton John, a gay man, does not. John has gone on record saying that he supports civil unions, but not gay marriage. Eminem and John, of course, made waves when they performed at the Grammy Awards together in 2001. At the time, GLAAD said they were “disappointed” and “appalled” that John would duet with the controversial rapper. The gay rights groups had given John an award for his efforts to fight homophobia the year before, and said his collaboration with Eminem “violate[d] the spirit” of that honor. I wonder how they would respond now that Eminem has declared his support for gay marriage, while John has been busy playing a homophobe’s wedding?
