Tonight brings the premiere of Bethenny Frankel‘s new show, “Bethenny Getting Married?” on Bravo. Bethenny has been my favorite of the “Real Housewives of New York City,” in part because I adore her wry sense of humor, but also because I so related to her struggle with dudes during the first two seasons of the show. Bethenny was the kind of girl who wasn’t sure she would find love—heck, the title of her new show has a question mark in it, stressing just how little Bethenny expected marriage for herself. But, interestingly, she revealed this week that when we see her walk down the aisle in the series, it isn’t for the first time. Apparently, Bethenny was married before and just never identified on the show as a divorcee. Bethenny got hitched in 1996 to a dude named Peter Sussman, who has the same All-American, dimpled look as Jason. “We were best friends for five years, and he always wanted to be more,” Bethenny told Life &Style. Eventually, he wore her down and they began dating. Two years later, Peter popped the question and they got married at the Four Seasons in Los Angeles, in front of 150 friends and family members. “I felt like, ‘This is really it? This is the person I’m going to spend the rest of my life with?’” says Bethenny. “You can’t go to bed with a piece of 8-by-10 paper. … I loved him because of how much he loved me. I got married too young. I didn’t wait for the great love of my life.” Who we presume is Jason.
“Until you find it, you’re not really sure it’s even possible,” says Bethenny. “You don’t know how the story can end.”
Oh wow. My feelings about Bethenny changed a lot this season, as she drew out a ridiculous feud with Jill and insisted on calling Jason gross pet names. But that quote has me firmly back on Team Bethenny. Hey, if it’s out there for her—it’s out there for the rest of us. Bethenny, you are once again my single girl role model. [NY Daily News]
